Merano, once the residence of the Counts of Tyrol, is nestled in the breathtaking scenery of South Tyrol at an altitude of 325 meters. The city captivates with its magnificent parks, extensive apple orchards, and sun-drenched vineyards with indigenous grape varieties such as Vernatsch and Lagrein. For centuries, Merano has been a retreat for those seeking relaxation and holistic well-being. With its appointment as a spa center by the Habsburgs in 1855, Merano's rise as an internationally renowned holiday resort began. Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Empress "Sisi") in particular made the town famous when she chose Trauttmansdorff Castle as her summer residence in 1870. Other prominent guests, including Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Sigmund Freud, enjoyed the mild climate and the healing effects of Merano's air . The discovery of the radon-rich thermal water at Vigiljoch also contributed to the development of the region's reputation as a spa resort. To this day, the historic Kurhaus and the magnificent Art Nouveau Merano City Theater bear witness to this glorious era.
